Museum of San Marco

Museum of San Marco
In 1869 the Museum of San Marco opened its doors. It has also been known as the museum dell’ Angelico for the fact that about one hundred works by Guido di Pietro Tosini (born in Vicchio del Mugello, 1387- 1455), who took the name Fra Giovanni da Fiesole in his religious life and is generally known as Beato Angelico, are collected here. Among the most important works by the artist, the famous Escape from Egypt, one of thirty-five scenes that decorated the doors of the Armadio degli Argenti in the beautiful church of Santissima Annunziata. However, it is the suggestive Deposition (painted between 1435 and 1440) that confirms the stylistic greatness of the artist and in which it is possible to admire the insuperable splendour for which the artist is known. On the first floor of the Museum of San Marco, which until 1866 was a convent, there is the immense dormitory with its high truss ceiling and numerous small monastic cells, each decorated with a fresco by Beato Angelico. The scenes represent the life of Christ and among these there is one of the artist’s masterpieces, the Annunciation, in which the totality of its author’s emotion can be admired. In addition, the Museum of San Marco is also home to works by Domenico Ghirlandaio and Fra Bartolomeo who lived in the convent at the beginning of the 16th century.
